Tegaderm Healing

With Tegaderm:

The first piece of Tegaderm should stay on for 8-16 hours, depending on how much the tattoo bleeds. IT IS NORMAL FOR BLOOD AND FLUIDS TO COLLECT UNDER THE BANDAGE.

This is an example of what the fluid build up can look like with tattoos that have more saturated pigment

With clean hands, remove the bandage, clean and dry the area and apply a second piece of Tegaderm. The second piece can be worn for up to 5 days. (You can order tegaderm on Amazon for cheaper, but you can also find it at you local pharmacy in the wound care section.)

-With clean hands, clean and dry your new tattoo and surrounding skin (lotions or ointments are not necessary).

– Peel off the paper backing of the Tegaderm to reveal the adhesive side.

-Gently apply over the tattoo, leaving about 1 inch of the bandage in contact with undamaged skin around the tattoo. More than an inch may be needed in highly mobile areas such as knees, hands ect.

– Remove the top surface backing, leaving only the Tegaderm bandage on the tattoo.

  • When you are ready to remove the bandage after 3-5 days. slowly peel off bandage from bottom to top (it is best to do so in the shower with soap and water).
  • Wash the area with an unscented, white soap and let it air dry.
  • Use white unscented lotion as needed for tightness or itchiness over the next week. Light lotions is best such as Cetaphil or Lubriderm. No regimen is needed for lotion during this time, it does not help heal the tattoo it just helps alleviate discomfort.

Tegaderm holds in the body’s natural moisture and healing enzymes, allowing the body to heal itself in the most efficient manner possible. After skin has been injured, healing elements are produced to help break down dead tissue and rebuild new tissue. Under normal circumstances, these healing elements dry up and evaporate which reduces their effectiveness. When this happens, longer healing times are required and scabbing and scarring can occur. Tegaderm locks in these healing elements, and allows the skin to continue to function as normal because the bandage is permeable to oxygen and water vapor (breathable). In addition, Tegaderm protects against dirt and germs while eliminating friction and other irritations that might further interfere with the healing process.

Without Tegaderm:

-When you get home, remove bandage if applicable, and wipe down the area with a damp paper towel. JUST WATER NO SOAP.

– Let your tattoo dry out for three days. After the three days apply lotion as needed for dryness or itchiness. White unscented lotion such as Cetaphil or Lubriderm works best, you can pick up travel sizes at Target, Walmart or even the Dollar Store. Your tattoo should never look wet after applying lotion, if it does wipe it down the area with a damp paper towel, let it air dry and start again.

-Your immune system is responsible for healing your tattoo, not the lotion, it is only there to alleviate discomfort. Over use of product can inhibit the healing process.

-While healing avoid swimming, hot tubs and the sun. No long hot showers or allowing soap and water to run over the tattoo during this time.

-After showering let your tattoo air dry, DO NOT use towels to dry off the area. If you get stuck to your shirt, sheets or anything else the first few days do not panic and rip off the fabric, while leaving it on, get the area wet and slowly peel off the fabric.

– Your tattoo may scab over, this is normal PLEASE DO NOT PICK YOUR TATTOO. This will damage the tattoo and your skin causing loss of ink and scarring.
